I give 5 stars for all the effort put in by the volunteers and associations and because the shop offers Georges Duby for sale. But I was extremely disappointed by the playfulness which prevailed over the story. Not a word about the builders, about the English presence in Guyenne, about the plans of the keep and the dwelling over the centuries, about how the life of the military garrison was organized through the ages... No word of course, on Thibaut d'Armagnac, comrade-in-arms of Ste Joan of Arc, of course! An illustrious fighter who helped save the kingdom of France, eh, who cares, wooden puzzles to build a castle or fake coats of arms are so much better when you're 5 years old! A deafening silence on all the historical figures who occupied the dungeon and its dwelling, no plan either of the missing dwelling. (Why? How? We don’t care, eh!) In a room in the dungeon, a military building, I remind you, we prefer to show you a video on medieval dance steps. In short, all the clichés about the Middle Ages are there. Visitors will leave as uneducated as they came. I'm not asking for much but at least a few plans of the tower through the centuries, plans of the house, a few labels with the names of the architectural elements, explanations on the work to reconstruct the tower, explanations on the floors which have disappeared... In short, a little history and come away having learned something. The courtly jousts were good but we had to take on the whole circus of actors with the lady grieving over the death of her husband to whom we offered jousts. It was uncomfortable at the end (I'm not criticizing the actors who do their job and adapt to an audience who only has a vision of the Middle Ages through the bullshit put out by Netflix) The music of the jousts, on the other hand, was worthy of Pirates of the Caribbean. Again-Discomfort! The historical re-enactment stands: such as Blacksmithing, wood carving and archery.... were the only activities of note. At least the speakers knew their subject. And they were able to convey some historical truths to the public. Special mention for the effort made by these speakers on their clothing. There was a man straight out of the 14th century, larger than life. Well done. However, there is the problem of dumbing down the public. That museums are reduced in their strategy to putting themselves at the lowest level to be accessible is very worrying. But for the rest, fun, more fun, nothing but fun, always fun. I remind you that in the 60s and 70s television offered high quality historical programs for everyone with “set historians” such as Henri Guillemin and Alain Decaux and no one died listening to them. to meditate.
