Lectoure is a “town of art and history”. From prehistoric times to the Gallo-Roman and medieval capital of the Lomagne its gentrification in the nineteenth century, its rich past can be read throughout its architectural heritage. From Lectora to Lectoure, a story rich in twists and turns

Occupied since prehistoric times, inhabited in the Mesolithic, it is the “Lactorates”, a Celtic people, who lay the first stones of the city, at the foot of the hill, on the banks of the Gers. The heights are reserved for the oppidum and a necropolis. It seems that this fertile land has welcomed Roman worshipers of Mother Goddess Cybele, in the third century. Remains of altars bear witness to the importance of this ancient cult.

The ancient city of Lactora will develop rapidly thanks to these very first pilgrims. Later, it was the Christians who took these Roman roads, and in particular that of Le Puy. Born from this enthusiasm and this faith, the religious heritage is growing in Lectoure: churches, chapels, Benedictine convent, hospitals… The medieval city becomes an important stage on the Ways of Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle. The section from Lectoure to Condom of the Via Podensis is also classified as a "UNESCO World Heritage".

Saint-Gervais-Saint-Protais Cathedral

Lectoure grew and ramparts were built to strengthen it. In the Middle Ages, it was considered the capital of Lomagne and the County of Armagnac. The twelfth century Cathedral is a splendor that shows the wealth of the city. In the sixteenth century, during the Wars of Religion, it would join the Protestants, led by Blaise Monluc. If it becomes Catholic in the seventeenth century, its vocation as a place of worship has never failed and has, historically and even today housed many religious communities.

With the centralization of powers under Louis XIV, the counties withered away and its status as capital is only a distant memory. It was not until the eighteenth century, his tannery and crafts in general have allowed the bourgeoisie to prosper. Beautiful mansions and mansions were built.

Lectoure has preserved many vestiges of this glorious past and offers its visitors a very rich architectural heritage. She turned to art and offers all kinds of cultural activities and outings.

Château Arton, a visit to an estate with a rich past in Lectoure

Delve into the heart of Lectoure's history, starting with that of Château Arton, an estate with a Latin name that reveals many secrets during a guided tour.

Château Arton, a Gallo-Roman wine-growing site

Did you know that Arton in late Latin means "bread"? The name is well chosen since at the time, Arton was a Gallo-Roman site organized into a hamlet, where the inhabitants came to bake their bread in one of the 3 ovens. The first habitat is also a troglodyte cave that still exists, witness to the rich past of this extraordinary terroir. Today a temple of the unique piece and address of the Haut-Armagnac appellation, Château Arton produces excellent Armagnacs on a confidential terroir, irrigated by precious water sources for the cultivation of the vine. The cellars, dug into the limestone rock, offer exceptional aging conditions to guarantee the perfect expression of a pure and unblended eau-de-vie.

Château Arton, an estate that shakes up the codes of Armagnac

To enhance the terroir and respect its most faithful expression, this is the mission of Château Arton, which owns more than half of the Haut-Armagnac vines. Based on permaculture and biodynamics, it preserves the exceptional aromas of the harvested grapes and distils a pure and unaltered eau-de-vie. The quality of this high-end Armagnac has also been rewarded several times by the prize for excellence at the Concours Générale Agricole de Paris, a source of pride for these passionate winegrowers. Find unique pieces at prices fixed not according to age, but according to the quality of the distilled barrel. Château Arton breaks the codes and intends to reform the Armagnac appellation to delight your palates with quality eau-de-vie. Discover their exceptional products during a guided tour, or at the few private events organized each year.

Until the 16th century, "Fleuree pastel" was the only blue dye in Europe. Subsequently, we will prefer indigo from India, but it will remain an agricultural tradition in the Gers. The "Bleu de Lectoure" has resumed its place and its culture in Lectoure, saving this local and traditional craft.
