The paths of Santiago de Compostela in the Gers, some advice before leaving

A pilgrimage on the Way of Le Puy cannot be improvised, and must be prepared. Indeed, even if the paths of Compostela are secure and marked, the hike extends over several days, with more or less long distances to cover to reach each stage. If you are not an experienced athlete, it is advisable to train your body and calves with long walks before departure. The trip must also be organized so as not to be caught off guard during the crossing. Here is some information to help you:

  • Contact the pilgrim accommodations to secure a night in a bed. Dinner and breakfast can be included depending on your wishes. Take the time to chat with your hosts, they are happy to listen to the details of your journey.
  • Bring a light backpack, with the bare essentials to change into. In the evening, you can wash a few clothes by hand if necessary, and let them dry the next day if it's a sunny day. (little tip: bring clothes pegs to hang your socks)
  • Plan for hiking shoes that cover the ankle to avoid injury and slipping. Most of the time they are waterproof.
  • Pack some snacks to munch on in your bag, such as dried fruit, fresh fruit, or granola bars. The pilgrimage is a unique trek that doesn't always require lunch.
  • Prepare a small first aid kit to treat minor aches and pains.
  • Don't forget your credencial , the pilgrim's notebook which will be stamped at each of your stops at the town hall or by your host.

Is everything ready? All you have to do now is go to Lectoure to begin your pilgrimage on the Via Podiensis in the Gers. Don't hesitate to contact the associations of the pilgrims or join the Compostela Facebook groups to share your feelings or get advice on the route taken.
