Visit Fleurance in 3 ...

The Gers is truly a flagship destination for holidays. In addition to its very famous gastronomy, this department offers visitors many reasons to take the time to walk there and discover villages steeped in history or benefiting from a rich heritage.

Fleurance is one of its villages where it is good to stop. The Fleurantine bastide dates from the 13th century, it is built on a hill. At first, a wooden enclosure closes the village and protects it, then, a few years later, the wooden palisades become brick walls. At the end of the 18th century, the ramparts were demolished. We suggest 3 beautiful places to discover during your visit to Fleurence.

An overview of what awaits you in Fleurance

The town hall

Les Halles, a charming element of Fleurance

A central heritage and architectural element of Fleurance, the hall-town hall facing you is not the first to have been built in the town. Indeed, the original one was unfortunately burnt down in 1833. Less than five years later, the new one was built and replaced it.

the name of Fleurance was strongly influenced by one of the most beautiful European cities: Florence!

With its pretty arcades (7 in number per side), it housed several municipal services. These were upstairs. Thus, space and volumes were optimized. On one of the facades, you can see a balcony, as well as a pediment, itself surmounted by a campanile.

And, if you take the time to go all around this building built on a square plan, you will notice 4 fountains decorated with cast iron statues (one at each corner). These statues each represent one of the 4 seasons.

The traditional market

The halls are home to a pretty, colorful and shimmering market every week. This takes place every Tuesday, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

On the stalls, you will find a whole host of local specialities, ranging from the famous white garlic from Saint-Clar de Lomagne, to poultry products from Gers, via melons from Lectoure, or even prunes from Agen (fr).

St. Lawrence Church

In the southern Gothic style, and built between the 14th and 16th centuries, the Saint-Laurent church in Fleurance has been listed as a Historic Monument since 1907. The bell tower refers to the bell towers usually built in the Toulouse style. What differentiates this church from those in the Toulouse region is the use of brick combined with stone.

A major astronomy festival takes place in Fleurance in August. We also recommend that you visit the Ferme des Étoiles in Fleurance (fr), to learn more about the stars and have the opportunity to make beautiful observations in the sky so pure and clear in the region.

Inside, 3 stained glass windows, located behind the choir face an exceptional organ. The three stained glass windows represent scenes from the Old Testament and were made in 1505. Moreover, all the stained glass windows are the fruit of the work of master glassmaker Arnaud de Moles.

The organ, meanwhile, dates from the 19th century and is a real gem with 1816 pipes. This organ is so exceptional that the church of Mirande asked for a copy of it to be made.

Fleurance lake

If you want to enjoy a relaxing and green place, go to Lac de Fleurance. This place is also a perfect place to practice nautical and sports activities. Indeed, you can go walking (or walking depending on the level), running, tennis or even fishing. Since the beginning of 2022, the leisure center has been labeled "Family course" by the National Fishing Federation. Arrangements have been made to benefit from this distinction.
